it's not like they will be spanking their head or chest off the steering wheel being all strapped in, but I'm sure some thing could be rigged for some use. That's not a stupid question. who knows..

The whole crash thing now, IMVHO, is more of a physics problem. Need to have more frontal CRUSH zone for direct head on hits is a place to start. Telescoping frame rails/tubing or something.

That Hans device I don't think would have saved Dale now after reading that last post either.

Why can't they use air bags?

Because of the importance of having some semblance of control of the car after the crash, and because it'd be so tricky to get them to deploy correctly.

And, though I don't know the details of Dale's crash, it's terribly unlikely you're going to hit the steering wheel in a crash when you've got a 5-point harness and it's attached to the cage. If you bust out of that, nothing's going to save you. In fact, I would think the forces required to bust out of that setup would be fatal.
