For the eighth month in a row, the average selling price of AMD-based PCs topped Intel-based ones, $896 vs. $802...Are you sure that P4 will take share from Athlon, rather than cannibalise P3 and Celeron sales?

Casually empiricistiacally speaking I do not think this implies that Mhz for Mhz AMD is commanding a higher price. I haven't noticed other than 1Gig AMD systems in the stores.

A more precise comparison, a more rigorous scientific analysis might be obtained by comparing the price of 1 Mhz systems and thereby actually produce some meaningful data.

Don't cha think?

Joe - Re: "Are you sure that P4 will take share from Athlon, rather than cannibalise P3 and Celeron sales?"

It will do both.

The Pentium 4 is clearly targeted at being a replacement for the Pentium 3 - and its performance puts it in a great position to regain market share from the AthWipers.

Joe - Compaq selects Intel's Pentium III and Celeron for new iPAQ computers.

"The new iPAQ Desktop models feature Intel's 815E chipset, and can be purchased with either the Intel Pentium III 866 MHz or Intel Celeron(TM) 700 MHz processors. "

Looks like AMD didn't cut the mustard.

New Compaq iPAQ Desktop Makes Business Computing Simple

HOUSTON, Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) has announced immediate availability of the latest Compaq iPAQ Desktop. Simplified for business computing, the iPAQ Desktop appeals to employees in corporate network environments who primarily use PCs for mainstream office productivity applications and corporate Internet/Intranet access.

Built with simplicity in mind, the iPAQ Desktop was designed to reduce hardware and software complexity and costs. By decreasing the size of the unit's footprint, eliminating ISA/PCI slots, and focusing on USB with Windows 2000 or Windows ME, the iPAQ Desktop delivers ease of deployment, support, and usability.

Security features were increased by adding a security bracket that locks the side covers securing major components of the system such as hard drive, memory modules, and legacy module. The security bracket is a separate component that ships preinstalled with every iPAQ Desktop and is mounted using two Torx tamper proof screws. The security bracket also has a design feature that allows the user to disable the multibay eject mechanism, preventing removal of multibay devices.

Starting at $499(A), the iPAQ Desktop is extremely affordable and easy to choose. There are two iPAQ Desktop versions. The iPAQ Desktop with Legacy Ports provides parallel, serial, and PS/2 ports for existing peripherals, running Windows 2000, 98, or NT4. The iPAQ Desktop Legacy-Free features Windows 2000 or ME and six USB ports for the new wave of USB peripherals. An optional snap-on legacy module easily allows users to convert the Legacy-Free unit to an iPAQ Desktop with Legacy Ports (parallel, serial, and PS/2).

The new iPAQ Desktop models feature Intel's 815E chipset, and can be purchased with either the Intel Pentium III 866 MHz or Intel Celeron(TM) 700 MHz processors. Multibay options include a CD-RW, CD-ROM, LS-120, 10GB hard drive and a Zip 250 drive.

(A) All prices listed herein are suggested U.S. selling prices. Actual pricing will vary.
