Their desire to protect themselves from Germany & the west was based on very real experiences. That may be true but when they enslaved other nations and built up a huge military in order to "protect themselves" the Western nations where right to prepare themselves by building up their military power. The Soviet Union's paranoia might have been based on real experience, but it was still paranoia and their military preparations where hardly 100% defensive. Tim

Scumbria Re..The Soviet Union was invaded twice in 30 years, and lost as many people as everyone in California and New York combined.<<<<< Scumbria. In an earlier post you mentioned 60 million people. AFAIK Russia lost approximately 20 mil civ and 2-4 mil army personel during WWII. While I am not sure of WWI casualties, I do know Russia lost as many civilians from Stalin's purges in the 30's and 40's. as Russia lost to WWII. The massive starvations from the forced collectivations decimated the population. To blame it all on invasions is denying history.
