Well, it's nice that QCOM IR is in damage control, but what does the following sequence of events mean:

1. QCOM announces single-mode WCDMA MSM and RF chipset (like two weeks ago). A good sign.

2. QCOM announces multi-mode WCDMA MSM and RF chipset roadmap at GSM World (a few days ago). Crowds cheer that the Q will replicate its IS-95 success in WCDMA.

3. Samsung announces tentative PrarieComm WCDMA design win. Crowds boo a bit.

4. QCOM says WCDMA won't be ready for a long time (with most of the GSM Congress scuttlebutt having to do with "God send mobiles" and the like). Crowds boo a lot and start packing up.

5. Logical folks ergo conclude that, by its CEO's own admission, QCOM's WCDMA MSM and RF chipsets are vaporware that won't see the light of day for years. Rumors circulate through the masses. Crowds panic for the exits.

I don't really agree with the above, but just pointing out that there is either a certain degree of logic to the market's reaction, or a certain degree of illogic to IJ's statements vis a vis the WCDMA chipset announcements.
