mr mark, here's my log showing things I tried to stop spontaneous disconnects...

set modem speed to 57000 from 115000. See if disconnects stop. 1-21-2001
disconnects did not stop. Maybe 1x per day

changed modem back to 115,000 and selected 'uncompressed' 2-4-2001
Still disconnects

installed new modem driver v5.92 dated 10-26-2000 2-17-2001
old driver was v5.42 dated 6-15-2000

I had deduced the fault did not lie with the ISP because I never had spontaneous disconnects with my desktop, which has a hardware modem. If I recall correctly, the updated driver was not dated and I had to deduce from the version # that it was newer. After installation I did see a date, but not before. Undated downloads, hints and tips are one my gripes. Sometimes I find computer advice that is years old and obsolete, but you wouldn't know it at first glance.
