that's precisely what i was thinking about! thank you for posting it. i'll add it to my pctips file so it won't get away from me again.

the remedy i was looking at specifically was Delete the ShellIconCache file. that was what was escaping me.

you may have read my follow up post to pw in which i told her i was able to right-click the desk top and choose 'refresh' from the menu. that fixed the rogue icons back in a second. (and the 'refresh' option appears in your posted microsoft article as the first thing to try.)
