Hadn't thought about the design being conducive to winter comfort - is it because the house is wide but not that tall? A steeper roof would be more attractive, IMO, but it would certainly be colder in the winter. Also the house is built into a hill so the basement is mostly below ground in the front of the house but is a walkout in the back of the house, and it stays warm in the winter, too. The house faces east and west, and is almost completely sheltered on the northern side.

I used to be so cold in the winter in Louisiana! Much colder than I am here. I go barefoot and wear shorts and t-shirts inside during the winter.
