The Verve: What you are missing is that 1x and 1xEV may be used in current spectrum alongside (as an overlay to) GSM and/or in new spectrum. Either will do to run rings around GPRS.

So if as you say, new sprectrum is available in Europe only for UMTS and that can not be changed, then where GPRS is being installed now, in current spectrum, is where 1x and 1xEV can beat it hands down for data transmission.

Best.

Verve: "UMTS spectrum is for umts -"

What is UMTS?

Is UMTS only WCDMA?

"And that goes for 1X as well - in the umts band. Perhaps governments will change their mind and allow other technologies if it is true WCDMA won't be here for several years, but that has to happen first. "

Exactly.. You have to have some balance.. If you are going to exclude GSM/GPRS, then you have to exclude 1x.. So do you think the governments are going to tell the operators who have paid them BILLIONS of dollars.. Geee!! Sorry, the Technology will not be ready for another 3 years.. You can not try to make money off of your spectrum until you can deploy (TRUE UMTS) services!! Which is kind of "Undefined" Anyway!!..

So given your statement of "but that has to happen first".. Assuming it happens.. (Which it will)..

So that puts 1x and GSM/GPRS in-play.. What do you think the existing operators are going to opt for.. GSM2100.. Or a new 1xEV network? What are the funding requirements between the two.. Which solution would provide the easiest avenue to revenues? Where would they get GSM/1x User Terminals.. Qualcomm says mid 2002 before we will see Chips! The Nords will have GSM/GPRS 2100 Infrastructure and Multi-Band UT's way before then!!

In addition.. If you look at the 3G auctions.. Several countries state that even though this is 3G spectrum.. You can stick anything in there you want.. New Zealand for example

In the end.. The Governments get their licensing fees.. And will not prohibit their licensee's from trying to make some money off of them..

In other words.. The Nords pushed the concept UMTS in the year 2001, to allocate new spectrum for these "next generation services." Then they put the brakes on once the, (mostly world wide spectrum) was allotted.. Now they will play their delay game once again. And populate the spectrum with their favored technology..
