Chaz,

I agree with you 100%. Both Ben Garrett and Eric L are great. Those guys share their knowledge so selflessly...

(BTW - let me tell you a little secret. I enjoy your posts too and love it when you ask those guys questions and engage them in discussion. You're so good at it. There are times when I'm too busy to read every post so I head right to where I know where the intelligent commentary exists - you're always in the middle of it.)

Anyway, I think one can make strong cases for each scenario, ie: a relatively timely '02 -'03 WCDMA debut, or a relatively late one '04, '05.

I'm of the impression that those GSM operators are holding out for wcdma...they're in a bunker with their decision. It's gonna take some serious selling to pull an operator or two from their bunker and surrender to the CDMA 2000 side. If that happens, then who knows where we'll wind up.

Mark Roberts seems to think that nobody is firmly committed to wcdma YET, even with all the posturing, agreements, etc.

We'll see.

BTW, where's Eric L lately? I see he's over on the NOK board - is he snubbing his American Q compatriots for the company of guys who speak with accents?

gdichaz:

"IMO. I look for any use of 1x and 1xEV overlays to GSM outside Europe, not in Europe - at least not in Western Europe. "

And when would you expect to see a GSM/1xEV overlay User Terminal? When would we see the first ASIC?
Mid 2002?

You are correct on the "you'll never see 1x in Europe mantra"..
