So much emphasis is placed on data speeds. Right now we need the applications to drive demand for high data rates and then let the best speed win. It will be interesting to we what "BREW's" up in the next year some possibilities I see now are

1) Wireless ISP's plug and play 144kb data connection no waiting for DSL/ISDN/ Cable modem installation with complete mobility. Many areas with CDMA coverage only have 56k dial up ISP service. Buy the modem box at your local CDMA carrier who will provide the portal.
2) 1X PC modem cards (sierra has this in the works) Alltel and Leap d.b.a. Cricket have all you can eat plans for around 39.95 competitive with cable modem cost which have limited availability and no mobility. This is a possibility with 1 x rollout. Interestingly despite PC slowdowns Dell reports most slowdown is in the desktop segment while notebook sales remain fairly robust. Some carrier should target notebook users. Modem cards could be subsidized and sold like handsets.
3) Increasing use and apps of PDA's. PDA's are used by mobile professionals ...mobile professionals that exchange data. Let the 3rd parties like the Palm community develop the apps while CDMA carriers and device manufacturers focus on wireless connectivity. Its starting to happen already for Palm. PDA's are eating eating away at the PC market especially as applications memory and wireless connectivity flourish.

What if carriers decided to subsidize portable computing devices with embedded 1x modems with a 2 year service agreement. ISP's are doing the this with 2 year contracts off desktops(MSN $400 rebates)

These are applications people are ready for today. I struggle with people using streaming video while the airtime meter clicks.

IMO By far the most compelling reason for a carrier to choose 1x today is still voice. 1x is around 6x more efficient with spectrum than GSM and 2x IS95. Euro carriers who did not participate in auctions could exploit this over competitors debt ridden from spectrum cost.

I am looking for 4 catalyst over the next year.

*A GSM or GPRS defection( a European defect would be especially nice)
*The China buildout to start
* A NOK 3G agreement
* A Spinco strategic partner
