I, for one, believe the US maintains tremendous competitive advantage by having the best mix of nationalities from all over the world. Ireland is beginning to get that reputation in Europe. But the best place for a young, bright, hardworking man/woman is still USA. I know a German PhD candidate in optical media who is graduating in July. He will only work for US companies - preferably in US.

This reputation feeds upon itself. The "Melting Pot" advantage has helped US to get a big lead in almost all technological areas and will continue to do so in the near future. JMHO
