We have a lot of trails here, too. I agree about the gravel, it is easy on the knees and feet. There is a nice converted railroad right of way called the Washington & Old Dominion Parkway, but it is paved with tarmac. Very nice to bike, it goes from Alexandria all the way to Purcellville, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains. Pretty all year round but especially in the fall.

They did that here. Paved over the old tracks on two spurs. Then they connected the system to a path along a waterway and ran trails through some subdivisions. Plans are to bring it out within a mile of where I live. Some sections you can bike and skate on, other sections are walkers only.
