When Win98 grabs a file and won't let go, I make a copy of it. After setting the attributes -S, -H, -R, the copy of the file can be manipulated any way you wish.

Cheers, PW.

P.S. Guessing time...

Notepad probably tries to open the file in Read/Write mode. Your system may be disallowing write mode while using the file. Copying opens the source file in ReadOnly mode, which your system finds acceptable.

i'm fresh out of ideas on how to open these two files with notepad if/when my system keeps telling me the process is in use. i can't see it running anywhere. perhaps i'll give end-it-all a shot, then try opening the two LOG files.

Mark

Just taking a wild stab but do you think you might reboot in safe mode and then a text editor might open them for you?
