i tried your general instruction to copy the file and try opening it. when i had the file before me in explorer, i'd right click and choose 'copy', but no signs of it appeared. duh. i also tried sending the files to either floppy or jaz disk and i got shared access violation messages. [edit in: maybe i'm a bit unclear on your advice to copy the file when i have said that i can't open it... and given that selecting the copy command produces no results for me in explorer that i can see. usually, copy produces a second file with the word copy added to the filename.]

so then i booted into safe mode and was trying ed's idea to open with a text editor there. while doing that i retried sending to jaz disk and one file successfully got sent and i then opened it from the jaz drive. but the other file is being a booger (sorry about the technical language).

i am focusing on permissions, but for my money each file gives admin (me) full authority to do whatever.

as for read/write... they were both checked hidden, with read being the only other option. and it mattered not what option i did or did not have checked.

this is not a big deal, as i told ed, i am plinking along here and will eventually hit upon a viable solution, i know i will.

thank you for your interest

:)
