"When you think about it it is zonkers to quit what you have been doing for over 50 years to start something you know nothing about! " I'm sure thats what the folks at Western Union said when they turned down the opportunity to invest in Alexander Graham Bell's new venture>

Or for a more relevant and recent example, the old railroad shareholders are very happy that Anschutz didn't take your view on it...1980's and early 1990's, the period Anschutz operated the Southern Pacific railroad, it founded SP Telecom to lay fiber optic cable along railroad rights-of-way. In 1995, SP Telecom was spun out of Southern Pacific, its headquarters moved to Denver, and renamed Qwest Communications.

Today Qwest is an Internet Communications company providing scalable, broadband Internet-based data, voice and image communications for businesses and consumers. The Qwest Macro Capacity ® Fiber Network, designed with the newest optical networking equipment for speed and efficiency, spans more than 104,000 miles globally.

In June 2000, Qwest merged with USWest, a regional bell operating company. In addition, KPNQwest, Qwest's European joint venture with KPN, the Dutch telecommunications company, is operating and continuing to build a high-capacity European fiber-optic, Internet-based network.

The Anschutz Company is the largest shareholder of the outstanding common stock of Qwest, a New York Stock Exchange listed company. KPNQwest is also publicly traded on the NASDAQ.
