Already we have a tremendous gap between the wealthy and the poor districts.

Yea and the poor students are stuck in poor schools while the rich students probably have good public schools and if they don't they can go to private schools. Vouchers give poor people the same chance. I recognize the benefits from educating everyone but I see no reason why this has to be done through a socialist system. Other important things such as food and water are not provided to the poor through such a system even when they are subsidized by the government. In the long run I don't see why there has to be any public schools at all, but any transition to a more market based system will take some time.
