Mark,
We weeren't refering to desk top icons. We were referring to little icons
listed before the site's name in IE favorites. I'm back to Netscape 4.76
now though because I can't get rid of IE 5.5 and it bogs down on me
usually after about 40 minutes. I deleted IE 5.5, downloaded IE 5.01
sp 1 and ran the setup but IE 5.5 still loaded. I like Netscape better
but since I'm starting A+/MCSE classes full time March 19th I figured
I should familarize myself with IE and Outlook which I have done.
I still need to review IE Express a little though, it has less in common
with Outlook than I assumed it would.

Now getting back to the desk top. I drag my icons around whatever image
I'm using for wallpaper but occasionsally they load on the left in alphabetical
order even though I don't have any of the arrange icon boxes checked.
It doesn't happen too often so I just drag them back where I want them.
I have no idea what triggers their alphabetical migration. Oh, and I haven't
needed Safe Mode so far this year.

mr mark, FWIW I frequently get unique bookmark icons [yahoo and other sites] that last a while but inevitably are replaced by the IE icon after normal pc usage. I live with it.

btw, i consider myself blessed computer-wise to be experiencing only these little icon inconsistencies.

True, it's only the current fly in the ointment. (:-) I'll try not to obsess over it.

BTW, sometimes the custom icons come back on their own, probably after visiting the site. Randomly of course.

Esteban

Edit: Actually one just reappeared just now, and I did not visit the site.
