It's a common journalistic practice, and of course we are both thinking of Janet Malcolm.

What Malcolm says is this:

"Fidelity to the subject's thought and to his characteristic way of expressing himself is the sine qua non of journalistic quotation."

And, incidentally, brilliant though she is, Malcolm's reputation has never fully recovered from that trial, and what it revealed about her journalistic practices and ethics, its outcome aside.
