OT / Scumbria, Re: SLAC & Earthquakes

They did consider earthquakes during the design of SLAC and here is a link (http://www.slac.stanford.edu/pubs/slacreports/slac-r-358.html) to a report prepared after the Loma Prieta earthquake (the year after I left Stanford) which did cause significant damage on campus (which, IIRC, had a $400M deductible on its earthquake insurance policy). SLAC seems to be fine with respect to earthquakes but it was interesting that some of the facility is located on fills -- carefully engineered of course ;-) and performing far better than expected.

This was the 3rd earthquake I have felt in Portland in the last two years and definitely the strongest. USGS site was swamped afterwards but the local news quickly picked up the story. Pretty boring video feeds and inane questions. Earthquakes have been a minor issue in my design of water system facilities with often conflicting requirements from different agencies (typical).
