I was commenting on Mr. Carter's comparison of drilling in/near Yosemite or Yellowstone.

Yosemite is a glorious place and Yellowstone is unique to the whole world with its splendor.

ANWR is located above the Arctic Circle on the coastal plain of northern Alaska. It is frozen 9 months of the year and is as desolate of a place as their is. The land that is desirable for drilling consists of tundra. There are no trees, no canyons, no mountains, no tourists, it's just flat and barren. It is pretty in it own unique way, as is everything in this world, but to compare it to Yosemite and Yellowstone is foolish.

The main concern is the wildlife. I worked in the Prudhoe Bay area of Alaska, which if you look on a map sets just west of ANWR. The worry of environmentalists with drilling and the pipeline was that it would decimate the caribou herds, which after 30 years of oil production has turned out to be a false claim. They have in fact increased.

The caribou would actually seek out drill pads and other man made areas to escape the hordes of mosquitos that are the bane of their existence there.

Actually the environmentalists need to be more concerned with the snow goose, who has done by far more damage to the arctic than any oil exploration has done.

I don't advocate wanton drilling around places like Yosemite and Yellowstone, but to deny the United States the ability to explore for oil in suitable places is being just plain ignorant of the issues.
