Yes, garter snakes can bite,
but nothing of any great consequence.
One bite did draw blood on a finger
when a snake fastened itself tightly to me by its jaws.
It was quite large for a garter snake though,
so I don't think you were in any danger of being bitten
if the snake was small....
some of the little grass snakes that I catch up here
are so small that I doubt they could really
get enough of a grip to bite.

Your mention of the scene in Stand By Me
reminded me of the movie...
and yes, there was a similarity...

Tonight, I'm just thinking a bit of my growing up years...
I've probably talked about this before...
I spent a few years growing up in a small Ontario town
where I was a bit of a "Tom Sawyer" kind of kid...
I think that's why Tom Sawyer always appealed to me...
There was also an element of my life that reminded me
a lot of To Kill A Mockingbird
That novel always rang so "real" to me that it was uncanny...
