i received another reply on this general topic that i'll share.

"While it is true that 2 hard drives on the same contoller cable can not operate simutaneously, you will in general not see it make any difference. Rarely do you access 2 drives at once in a work station. For those times that you are trying to run a program simultaneously from both drives, then the both programs will operate slower. However, modern IDE drives are fast enough that is often not a problem unless the programs being run are very data intensive. A second controller card is always nice to have. Then you can have 8 ide devices. Or, 4 devices with each one on a separate controller." - hillbilly
