uncle, people used to get pensions and so they didn't put as much away in these types of accounts. the retirement savings has been pushed from employer to employee. sure, there are some differences, however, the magnitude isn't revolutionary. and, as many, many people are figuring out, invested 401k money is easy come, easy go... i won't even mention house equity is down even though we have had HUGE housing inflation. this is a credit bubble of proportions the world has never seen.
