people used to get pensions and so they didn't put as much away in these types of accounts. the retirement savings has been pushed from employer to employee. sure, there are some differences, however, the magnitude isn't revolutionary.

At least for those of us in our twenties....there is no way that anybody's pension is going to match putting 10% away for the next forty years. Many people I know are sort of living paycheck to paycheck...and yet they are still putting the 10% into their 401k's. They rely on income tax refunds, and bonuses for any big purchases (or to fund a separate ROTH IRA). They must show up terribly in the statistics....and yet they will be pretty well off when they are in their thirties. These generally are unmarried single professionals.

OTOH....it does seem like you can get a home with a lot lower downpayment than in the past. All you need is 5-10% and a good credit history....
