You sure you aren't Sgt. Abbadusky? He was the head DI when I was in basic. He told us forget carrying grenades and knives and pack extra ammo. If you can throw a grenade that far or stick a knife in the enemy your rifle is in range. He manned a machine gun at Chu Li. Fired for over 24 straight hours through several barrel changes.
