I wish it were possible to stop them. My perception is that Afghanistanis are the hardest, fiercest people in the world. I am not aware of any other primitive culture that has defeated a relatively advanced culture (Russia) by sheer force of will, at least not in modern times. The Taliban is in charge as a direct and proximate result of US foreign policy, as successors to the English in the "Great Game." They are not liked here, but it's about energy (oil) now, so that complicates matters.
