I had always chuckled when folks say US today cannot be compared to Japan of yesterday. They are right, as the Japanese saved more, borrowed less, and paid for everything for cash, except the house, which most could not afford to buy anyway. Bottom line is that the Japanese were more prepared for a bursting bubble, with both savings and export generated liquidity. Their family structure also helps to soften the burst splash damage.
