It is all a blur, but I asked someone QCOM related at the meeting about Nextel iden/1X phones. They said that Nextel had asked MOT to share the necessary IPR with QCOM to allow Q to produce iDEN/1X chipsets, and MOT refused.

cfoent,

<<At the SHM Irwin spoke about a new feature that will soon be available with CDMA - Q-Chat he called it. I understand that Sprint is intending to add such a feature next year to compete with Nextel. I do not know if this is so, nor whether it involves "Q-chat".>>

Sprint has highlighted their chat/walkie-talkie feature in several of their recent outlines of future product offerings. It is also the reason, IMHO, Nextel is so hot to negate PCS's technology advantage......by using the same technology.

The MOT/iDEN comment from VMan is also interesting. I wonder if a dual-mode phone is necessary. I would think a CDMA phone running on a slice of Nextel spectrum could chat with a MOT phone running on another slice of Nextel spectrum. Anyone? If so, though roaming during the upgrade might get a little hairy, MOT's decision not to play might mean ole Batwing just bought themselves another ticket out the door.
