there are two possibilities imo: consider that GE Capital is very secretive regarding the details of its positions...so it is possible that they are simply throwing good money after bad, in a misguided effort to rescue their original positions.

the other possibility is that they now fancy themselves savvy vulture investors...which they obviously are not, as Montgomery Ward proves (M Ward was btw. one of the premier speculation vehicles of the 1920's bubble).
