In answering other things, I had neglected to address this:

I thought Neo had backed off that when we reached agreement and what we agreed to was a social compact, but I could have misunderstood.

When I use the phrase "stake in society", I do not mean to imply that it is purely voluntary. Yes, we can refuse to acknowledge it, but it is not a neutral act. Since the stake is a result of our nature as social beings, and we have our best chance of fulfillment in society, to opt out is bad for the individual. Secondly, those of us in society have every right to disapprove of those who behave in so stupid a manner, especially if they are parasitic on society.
