I have the same recollection of reports that a disadvantage of Athlon vs. P4 was a lack of critical word first from the L2, but this document may indicate otherwise:

OTOH, I think it only discusses existing data in the L2 (not fetched data following a miss) so maybe that is an "easy" performance gain coming in Palamino.
