Lillian Leitzel chinned the bar 27 times with one hand By profession, Lillian Leitzel was an aerialist. She had performed in a number of circuses, including the famous Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey production. This pint-sized acrobat, only 4 feet, 9 inches tall and weighing 95 pounds was gifted with a strength that was almost unbelievable. The record for one-handed chin-ups by a male athlete at the time was held by an Englishman named Cutler, who in 1878 completed 12 one-handed chin-ups. The difficulty of chinning with one hand is well recognized. So when Lillian came to Hermann's Gym in Philadelphia in 1918 to work out with some acrobats, the gymnasts who were present scoffed at her claim that she could best the world's record for one-handed chin-ups. Lillian was 36 years old at the time. Responding to the offer of a small, friendly wager to test her boast, Miss Leitzel took to the bar and clicked off 27 right-armed chin-ups in a row. After the pay-off and a short rest, Lillian had one more shock left for the bystanders. She leaped to the bar, this time with her LEFT hand! and did 19 more one-handed chinups-a performance that again broke the male right-hand record. (I did not look up what the current record for one-hand chin-ups are, or where to look) Oldest female marathon finisher guinnessworldrecords.com Who: Jenny Wood-Allen When: 18-Apr-1999 Where: United Kingdom What: 87 Years -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jenny Wood-Allen (b. 1911) from Dundee, Scotland, completed the 1999 London marathon, aged 87, in 7 hr. 14 min. 46 sec. She has now completed over 30 marathons and raised well over £30,000 (US$43,926) for charity. Jenny Wood-Allen (b. 1911), a former Conservative district councilor for 14 years and Justice of the Peace, was born and bred in Dundee, Scotland. As a child, she never enjoyed sport at school and always came last in races. When she decided to take up running at 71, even her son said, “Mum, you can’t even catch a bus when you run, so how are you going to manage a marathon?” To make things worse, Jenny was advised against running by her doctor, despite her heart, lungs, and blood pressure being equal to someone half her age. Needless to say, she ignored this advice and hasn’t looked back. She has now completed over 30 marathons and is a member of the Scottish Veterans’ Runners Club. She continues to raise money for the Children’s Hospice Association in Scotland (CHAS). Widowed in 1991, Jenny has three sons and six grandchildren
