Joe, So 70% of Intel server CPUs are going to single or dual servers, and will be potentially exposed to competition later this year from AMD. Only 30% of the server CPUs will be shielded from AMD competition.

Long as they're all from companies like RackSaverâ„¢, not much threat. OK, someone with a little more clue will use AMD. Also, there is revolutionary packaging development going on right now in the 1-2-4 way server space. The OEMs are working furiously to get this new concept out, and anything they can eliminate, like looking at an alternative CPU chip supplier, will be done. Also, low power is critical in this packaging scheme, something AMD has been ignoring. Amazingly, one startup server company getting a lot of attention is using Transmeta. Guess they'll look if you have something a lot different, like sub watt CPUs.
It'll be interesting.

Ah...that AMDroid Mantra again "Potential" !!!

How do you think AMD's track record on the 760MP will play out for "potential" customers?

Do you think those customers will look only at the cheap prices AMD will offer?

And - since the volumes are comparatively low with respect to Desktop CPUS - and AMD's only lever is their cheap CPU prices - just what will AMD have to gain by entering this market ?

Answer - very little - low volume and low ASPs.

Re: "Only 30% of the server CPUs will be shielded from AMD competition."

Cool - and I'll bet that 30% covers the HIGHEST margin Intel XEON CPUs !!

Glad to know that AMD won't be pissing in Intel's High Margin Server Soup any time soon.

Could I asked where you got this information?

TIA,
