David: Re: BB's recommendation for AMAT...

I specifically recall a radio show caller asking about AMAT -- probably in the summer or fall of 1998. The caller was wondering about the right price to buy in, and whether the shares could drop lower. I very distinctly remember Bob's response, because he said something like "that stock (AMAT) will NEVER drop below $25 per share!" (This was pre-split--would be 12.50 today.) I was surprised by his making such a positive and emphatic statement, because even back then, Bob tended to be somewhat vague in his specific stock discussions on the radio. Of course, the shares did drop below $25 during the asian-contagion, though not very much below...[Just looked up...droped to 22ish on October 8th.]

To my recollection, he has not recommended AMAT in his newsletter. As several other posters have mentioned, Bob was very high on the tech sector in the fall of 1998...suggesting DCAing into it many times on his radio show. (Which, incidentally, was a great call...those who took his advice were well rewarded.)

Regards,

Bill Shepherd

davidk555,

The following is a link from way back.

Message 4519762

Furthermore, Bob was making favorable comments about the chip equipment group way before the Asian crisis hit and when it did hit he stipulated it wouldn't effect the group. This is just one link referencing that botched theory, I'll look for more...

Message 4840463

Whereas it's true he recommended DCAing into the large-cap chip equipment group in the fall of 1998 over the radio, he already had many of his listeners underwater from previous radio advice. AMAT was never recommended in the newsletter for the period in question.

I believe there are more posts regarding the initial favorable comments (pre-DCAing in 1998). Also, there was debate over how long of a period the DCAing covered. I think I wrote about this and I will look for those posts as well, but in short when someone advises to DCA it is usually over an extended period in time. The group took off relatively soon after Bob's updated DCAing advice so those that truly were DCAing probably never got a full position. Sound familiar (CTR1 and don't chase)????

Also, Bob's advise of when to sell these stocks was incredibly ambiguous.

Best Regards.
