3rdeye, your perception about conservatives is wrong. You state that conservatives feel that people on welfare "are lazy cheats sucking the rest of us dry". Where have you heard that except in your imagination? I think people on both sides know that there are rich cheats and poor cheats. The difference is that dems actually come out and call people that are in the 39% tax bracket greedy. The truth is these people legitimately feel they are contributing enough to pull their weight in our society and more. I don't think many repubs come out and say that welfare people are "lazy cheats". I personally feel that race relations and helping the poor are two of the biggest problems America has. The difference between the parties is in how to improve these conditions.

The dems feel that class warfare (that you are perpetuating) is the best course of action. Pit the poor against the rich, then we will stick up for the poor and look like heroes (to the poor anyway). The repub message (especially with GWB) is that people can improve their conditions by working hard, accepting responsibility, thinking (and acting) positively, etc. I know that people can aspire and achieve in America no matter where they start (I realize it is much easier when you start at the top). You seem to feel that it is hopeless for most of the poor. Just transfer some wealth from the 39% guys/gals and you can rest at night thinking you done good.

Dear Thirdeye, do you have some dirt in your eye? >>What I can't ignore is the seemingly universally held opinion among conservatives that people on welfare are lazy cheats

Having read many posts from many on this thread I don't know where you get this concept. I also wonder if you considered that the small group you dealt with, that to you represent those who indeed need assistance, are in fact only a small percentage of those who receive assistance. I know of no conservative who hold the view that people on welfare are lazy cheats
sucking the rest of us dry.

I do believe that a very large number of lazy cheats use welfare to have a better life at the expense of all. But this is a far different opinion from what you clain is a universally held opinion. Of course I'm and extreme liberal and not a conservative.
