I keep waiting for the cable here to slow down, meanwhile my DSL connection at my studio has gotten slower and slower. @Home consistently blows away my DSL connection. The Covad guy who installed my DSL had worked for both Covad and Comcast@Home, he said I was one of the first going to my CO. We were talking about the difference between cable and DSL and the misconception of the dedicated line making DSL faster. He said, wait 'till they get that thing loaded up at the CO and people realize how much they are paying for a connection that isn't much faster than 56k. It didn't take long before I started seeing a marked slow down. Meanwhile @Home can be almost instantaneous as long as I'm not going through their stupid proxy servers (unless I'm on SI which has notoriously slow servers).

That was an interesting reply that you sent to Grace, John. In the cable modem case that you cited, by the cableco's "retuning," are you referring to (1) a physical re-segmentation (re-branching) of services in the outside plant, or (2) improving back end (upstream) capacity in the edge (towards the core), or (3) something else that was done in software? Curious, since each of these remedies, or some combination of the three (or more), would apply under different circumstances. FAC
