While all of these things are true, it is not true that guns are more available now as opposed to 30 yrs ago. Guns were always available. What has changed is that now a lot more people are packing guns. We used to settle our arguments with our fists, now they use guns. But anyone could have boughten a gun easier 30 yrs ago than you can purchase one now.

You assume these kids are going to a store and purchasing a gun....that could not be further from the truth. The reason they have guns to settle disputes as opposed to 30 years ago is because guns are more available to them not in stores but thru the black market.....and that black market is huge.

This is not the typical Rep. vs Dem. BS we post about..this is a serious problem...this is truly the moral decay that the Reps. complain about when referencing Dem. or B. Clinton. The problem has reached epidemic proportions in the inner city and is now infecting our suburban areas......and you can see by the posts on this thread, we are unwilling to take the steps needed to stop it. Kids live by their own rules and will not be stopped by BS rhetoric or by executing one of their own.

This is unfortunately also true. I really think we have to set up our high schools like our colleges where the kids can choose their high school, and classes and to some degree, what kind of school they wish to attend. I think most of the problems stem from kids who don't want to be there, who can't seem to find a better way change their situation. So they lash out.

No, Harry, most kids like to learn. However there are kids who are ostracized if they do not fit what is acceptable, and you know what I mean by that.....and those standards of acceptability stem from adults and more importantly, from what they see on the tube or in the movies. Again, the problem is that they don't have the emotional development nor the experience to see that these standards on tv and in the movies are idealized and are faked...airbrushed, whatever. These standards are so high, its not surprising that anorexia and bulimia are increasing not only among the girls but the boys as well. And so there are certain kids who are not acceptable no matter what they do, they can't possibly meet the standards imposed upon them and so they react....sometimes in perverse ways...they mistreat an animal or a smaller kid or they get revenge....and getting revenge is becoming much more popular now.

We really need to find a way to make high school an enjoyable period of one's life. The kids need to realize high school is there for their benefit, and we as a society, need to back off, and let them decide, they would be better off in school.

That's right....they need to learn from us that its okay to be different, to know that its not the end all to be the hottest girl or the most awesome athlete....that playing an instrument well or being able to act in a play or knowing the formula for the speed of light are important too; if not more important.

Another point I would like to make is that we should be teaching kids at a younger age,(kindergarden or beginning school) that the kind of picking on the nerd behavior does happen and we need to teach the kids not only how destructive it is, but also how the kids should deal with it. And if they can't deal with it, we need to allow them to change their environment. You are right that the teachers can't ignore the problem, but rather than trying to stop the problem; because I believe these problems are so common, it will be impossible to stop the problem;I believe we need to address the problem before violence rears its ugly head. It is easy to blame the guns, but to be effective, we need to address the underlying causes of the violence.

You are right.....we need to start teaching these things to kids in kindergarten. The worse part about all of this is that some of the teachers play into this whole popularity thing; and are afraid or unwilling to step in when they see a kid being abused and worse, sometimes become one of the abusers.
