Green Bay Packers President Bob Harlan said Monday that the release of the 2001 regular-season schedule, which is usually this week, may be delayed up to 10 days as league officials decide whether to put the plan into effect this season. Monday night games are televised by ABC (Channel 2 in Green Bay). "They asked us about it at the league meetings last week and everybody was very much in favor of it," Harlan said. "It's just whether they'll be able to start it in (2001) or '02." When it makes out the Monday night schedule, the NFL tries to focus on teams it believes has a good chance to make the playoffs. But there have been instances when teams not included on the Monday night lineup wind up being among the best in the league. "Sometimes there are clubs that surprise you," Harlan said. "Two years ago, St. Louis didn't play on Monday night and won the Super Bowl. The same thing happened with Baltimore last year." Harlan said the league is considering waiting until possibly three weeks before the last two Monday night games before deciding which games would have the most appeal on those last two dates. The New York Giants, who reached the Super Bowl last year, also didn't play on Monday night last season. During the second-to-last Monday night game in 2000, Tampa Bay and St. Louis played in a game that had huge playoff ramifications. But the final Monday night game of last season was a matchup between teams heading in opposite directions. Tennessee had clinched a berth while Dallas had been already eliminated from playoff contention. Besides the Ravens and Giants, other teams that made the playoffs last season but didn't play on Monday night were the New Orleans Saints and the Philadelphia Eagles. Eighteen of the 31 teams in the NFL played on Monday night at least once during the 2000 season.
