First, in Windows98, you'll see the message "Windows is starting..." even though it's DOS that's starting. You'll eventually get to a DOS prompt.

On my system, I hold down F6 key while booting to get a menu of choices. One of these is DOS. (It could be another key on your system. In fact, it could be another key on mine too, the way my memory's been lately.)

The hard way would be to edit your MSDOS.SYS file to add the following lines under the [Options] heading to give you ten seconds to make your choice before Windows proceeds to boot normally.

[Options]
{***Original stuff goes here***}
BootMenu=1
BootMenuDelay=10

You are correct in assuming that filenames meeting 8.3 requirements need no conversion.

In DOS, typing C:\PQDI\PQDI should work.

However, I'm not happy learning that DI chokes. Do you have enough disk space for the image? Have you checked the health of your disk? I'm nervous to ask -- are you saving the image to a different disk or partition? -- (My DI, ver 2.0 won't allow this.)

Cheers, PW.
