In civil law, if a defendent fixes a perceived problem that may have caused an accident, it can't be used against them in court in a PI case. The idea being that the it is important to remove the risk of injury to others than it is to have it as evidence in the court. mph or OMD could probably explain this more clearly, but essentially, it embodies the same thing you just said, "fix it now, don't look for blame".
