You really are not grasping what is being said. Of course we, as human beings, care about things, and are capable of enjoyment. Nevertheless, most of our investment is in personal matters, and we know (assuming materialism) one day nothing that we cared about or invested ourselves in will matter. Precisely because we care, that is a painful thought. Precisely because life has subjective meaning, the idea that objectively we really are refuse is horrifying. Everything we care about is one day destined to crumble into dust. I guess one can whistle past the grave yard, but not everyone finds that a satisfactory response.

Assuming personal immortality and a caring God, life has objective meaning as well, and will be brought to account by God, so that everything is, at last, in its place.

Yes, there is the fear that it is not so, and some anxiety, but it is a lot better than being haunted by an unmitigated sense of futility.
