"I thought it was only the guns doing the damage and that people were not capable of pulling the trigger"

And you thought right! Guns are doing a deadly damage.
They are designed to do this, to kill. Kill people.
People are easy subjects of emotional stresses. In many
situations, especially when immature persons are involved,
they are very capable to pull the trigger if the trigger
is readily available. If not, make your own scenario.
But do not tell me about defending your home against
government invasion.

Repeat after me: guns are designed with a primary
purpose to kill people.
If killing people is within your definitions of a
civilized society, I rest my case.
