In the equatorial rainforests, one gets the impression that there are creepy crawlies on practically every vine. That suggested the term "excess" to me.

Interestingly, in the Blue Ridge (which is about 2 and a half hours from me) there is a similar phenomenon in the highest reaches. The taller trees block sunlight, and the lower trees become stunted and sometimes denuded of leaves. Although the rainfall is not nearly as great, the elevation brings a microclimate similar to Eastern Canada.....
