Mike -- Where in the Bx? I'm from the SE Bx, and have similar memories, but I'm 8 yrs older and was active in CCNY (an entirely free college, paid by taxpayers) against McCarthy. In fact, I simply could not consider college unless it was free.

OT re earliest political recollection:

My High School Social Studies teacher told the class that he would take us to volunteer at whichever candidate's political campaign we chose. This was in suburban New Jersey. I was the only one who wanted to volunteer for McGovern.

OT - "earliest political recollection"

The Cuban missile crisis. I didn't really understand much about it at the time (age 7), but my parents were scared as hell. After that, I clearly recall JFK's assassination. I doubt there's been an single event since then that has had a greater emotional response from so many across this country.
