Hi Mang,

Where did you get that a cell phone cost almost $2000 in China? Yes, there are some very fancy phones in China that cost a lot, but generally speaking, phones are not expensive in China. Also, engineers with some project management responsibilities can make $2K or even more per month in after-taxed income, which is why that it's getting increasingly hard to bring Chinese engineers into the US.

Acer has been selling PDAs in China for quite some time. The other high end player is Legend. I am not sure which one used Win CE. I think it was Acer. PDAs have not been popular in China. Most Chinese tend to buy more Franklin type of devices. They are significantly cheaper, and offer a good Chinese/English voice dictionary. Today, I don't know if there is any good none-keyboard Chinese input method. The best is probably eZiText provided by Zi Corp. zicorp.com. Who knows, Palm may work with them to get Chinese input there. Zi also provides text input for other languages such as Korean.

Best regard,

Khan

Mang:

Like Khan, I think your US $2000 price for a cell phone in China is too high. While there may be some high end models priced up there, this article from last November cites Xie Linzhen of the Chinese MII, and notes an average cell phone price of US $242 in China:

chinaonline.com

Over 35 million cell phones were sold in China last year, this year it's projected to be 50 - 60 million, and with that kind of mass market volume the ASP has to be at a more "reasonable" level than the $2000 your friend paid.

P.S. Thanks for taking the time to translate Tom's link - it made much more sense than the Alta Vista translation I tried!

1 US $ = 8.28 yuan, so these prices are in line with the $242 or 2000 yuan number I cited previously.
