If you had sat through 50-plus bargaining sessions with the corporate suits, as I have, you would understand where I'm coming from.

I didn't realize that you were a union official rather than rank and file. That certainly explains your point of view. I think that if one is in a union shop, it is possible (although not necessarily required) to be satisfactorily represented by a union.

The environment with which I am most familiar is one where bargaining unit employees are "represented" by officials elected by a relatively small number of dues-paying members. Employees are just amazed when they discover that, if they want to form a committee to address an issue with management, management cannot legally work with them on the issue. They don't understand this and they are horrified when they find out. Last year I was in communication with an organization that was faced with a vote on whether or not to bring in a union. Fortunately, they opted to take their chances with management.

I agree with you that management can be real jerks, but then so can union officials. Union officials often negotiate for the benefit of the union rather than for the union members. I'd rather keep the total number of jerks in the equation to a minimum.

If they're so bad, why doesn't everyone quit? Put them out of business and end your suffering and their abuse of you at the same time. I mean no one should have to put up with it if it's as bad as you say.

Interesting news last night. Local TV stations came on with this: "More that 600 union auto workers are without jobs. They will only collect 95% of their pay until their jobs are given back to them." I guess that means they'll be paid to surf the net, or play golf, or whatever. But only 95%. Shameful of GM.

flap, You're still missing it. If you, or any other labor hack, doesn't like the company they work for, or the people who run it, go get another job. These owners have risked their capital to build a business to provide a product, or a service, if the best quality available, at the most reasonable price possible. All you guys do is punch a clock, ask when your coffee breaks are, and bitch about mistreatment. You didn't put up any capital. You didn't risk your future. You didn't do anything but demand a paycheck for a job that, most of the time, you did not perform satisfactorily. No one has ever tied you, or any other employee to a job. You, and your compadres, are free to get another job anytime you want to. Management is stuck with what they have, and must sink or swim, while the rats are free to leave the sinking ship. ~H~
