Karen: I am just a common working man who was drafted to serve on several bargaining committees at work and, just recently, to serve on our (small) unit's executive committee. I am guided by common sense and doing what's best for the family man and single working mom with three kids. That's it. People on this thread think I know where Jimmy Hoffa is buried. To date, I have yet to attend any kind of union function, rally or workshop. Once every other year I phone the international for advice on certain problems, and they always are very helpful. (By the way, this is where a good chunk of our dues go ... so that when I call the international, I get through right away with a person who can help. ) Every union is different. Every international is different. Every local is different. Most of the people on this thread who bash unions only know what they read in the papers from the likes of Robert Novak or hear on the radio from right-wing bashers like Rush Limbo. They have little grasp of reality, or, if they do, the info is dated by 30 years. But trying to talk sense into some of these people is impossible. But I can say one thing with certainty: If any of them were in my situation, they would also be a union member, and proud of it. Thank you for your reasoned response. It's nice to chat with someone occasionally on this thread who doesn't have two decades of right-wing baggage to unload in every post.
