It is a multi-mode chipset. Could this operate in a GSM network?

If this chipset could operate in a GSM network I would be ecstatic. The chipset is an IS-95 compatible chipset with no GSM functionality. Don't get me wrong...the chipset definitely has its place in the Q family.

This might have been a case of misplaced expectations on my part. When Qualcomm had the press release in February for the 6xxx....I had assumed that the chipset which would come out in early '02 would be some type of CDMA/GSM chipset. It wouldnt matter to me if it was W-CDMA/GSM or 1x/GSM.

If Qualcomm is seriously trying to get a 1x overlay of a GSM network, they will need a 1x/GSM chipset SOON. If the chipset didnt sample until next summer....we couldnt see handsets based on them until early '03. I dont think that this would provide a compelling advantage for operators waiting for W-CDMA.
