but among us "on my own time" and "I was paid for it" are contradictory

I guess that is what I was commenting on.

My biggest problem with unions is that everyone is equal. I am here to tell you that every employee is not equal. But because of union rules every journeyman is paid the same.

One of my oldest management philosophy's is you can not over pay a good employee, they will always make you money. Conversely you can't underpay a bad employee as they will always cost you money. Unions often are protecting the latter as the former if they are not treated right will find a job anywhere in any economy.

I also favor employee's taking part in some of the risk by accepting somewhat lower pay but taking part in profit sharing. Again the union doesn't fly with this because the bottom of the food chain will probably remain unemployed.

Having been in sales management I'm also very much in favor of performance based pay another big union no. Productivity is often not what they are after.

Lincoln Welder has several assembly plants. The unions have tried for years to organize but can't succeed. Why? Everyone is paid piece work and gets profit sharing. The CEO is paid 2 1/2 times the wage of the lowest hourly wage person. The average assembly person at Lincoln in the last newsletter that I read has an average wage of 82K per year + benefits and profit sharing. Last years profit sharing averaged 17K, not one of their better years.

Lincoln operates under the philosophy that I would like to operate under and the union hates them. I wonder why?
