I understand that. OTOH, there are hundreds of reasons for killing someone. Why should this one be singled out for enhancement? Why not because their reason was frivolous? Say, they killed someone because they didn't like the color of their shoelaces?

This simply brings thoughtcrime into the law. Let's punish the crime, not the contents of the criminals heads.

Seems to me that the issue of hate crimes is an attractive way of marketing oneself to specific groups. support for hate laws apparently provides proof positive that one cares about the groups. It provides an opportunity to claim that others who do not support hate laws are mean people, with no compassion and hint that they probably also dislike the groups that would receive this additional "protection".

Enforcing existing laws, IMO would be a more effective than additional hate legislation which could drain resources away from existing enforcement efforts.
